Temporary or Provisional licenses are issued to genetic counselors who are eligible to take the ABGC board exam, but have not yet passed. These licenses allow GCs to work while they wait to sit for the boards. The initial fee for these licenses is sometimes lower for that of a full or permanent license, but you typically have to pay for a full license as well after you pass the boards.
(Please note that some states have temporary licenses that are meant to be used by out-of-state providers who will provide services during an emergency, or for military personnel and their families who are temporarily stationed within a state. These are NOT the type of temporary licenses this information is referring to.)
