Overview:
License renewals for South Dakota are available 90 days prior to the expiration date.
Renewal Date: July 1st every year
Difficulty: ⏳⏳ 2 out of 4 hourglasses. There are quite a few more questions, particularly in relation to employment. Just takes a little more time and thought to complete.
Timeline: This one usually takes 2 or 3 minutes if everything goes smoothly.

What you'll need:
Completed 25 hours of continuing education OR a current ABGC certification
Process:
Login to the South Dakota portal. Click on the blue "Go" button for "Licensee Website" to get to the correct page.
Start Renewal by clicking on "Renew Online".
Update Name Information. If your name needs to be changed, check the box to which it will then prompt you with further steps.
Add Address and contact info. For Address Type, select address you would like to fill out. Remember to uncheck the "Public Flag" box if you do not wish to have the address listed on the SD verification website. To add another address, click on "Add a New Address".
Complete Demographic Information. Pretty self-explanatory. For the NPI number, if you cannot remember it, you can look it up here.
Fill out Education. Only graduate degree information is required.
For Practice Information, answer to the best of your ability. Know that it's not you, these questions are a bit ambiguous even for us. But we're here to help. This is how we usually answer for our genetic counselors, with answers for Q4 - Q6 changing depending on the circumstances of the GC:
For Question 8, if you hold other licenses besides SD you will answer "No".
For Question 9, you will list all the other states you hold licenses in. Note, when you click "Add" a pop-up will appear asking if you want to leave the site. This prompt is quite deceiving. By clicking "Yes", it only refreshes the page with the new added license.
Choose how you will be fulfilling the continuing education requirement, either by completing CEU hours or maintaining a current ABGC certification.
Answer Disclosures. Read each question carefully. A few of the questions (Q1-2, 10-11) are inverted and become a double negative.
Review summary and type in name/birthdate as virtual signature.
Pay the renewal fee with a credit or debit card. You can download the very basic receipt once the payment goes through or wait for the receipt to be emailed to you. You can also access a receipt from the home page under "Document Vault".
An updated license will be mailed to you at the mailing address given in the renewal. Note, South Dakota does not have an option to download the license or receive it by email. This is the only copy you will receive the license.
Tips and Tricks:
If you have forgotten your username or password to the SD portal, you will need to email sdbmoe@state.sd.us between 9am - 3pm CDT.
On the Home page (same page where renewal button is located), your current addresses are listed. Though it may seem you can update your address from here, it will not let you. Currently the ONLY way to update your addresses is during a renewal.
The expiration date will take 48-72 hours to update. You can either check on the "Licensee Website" to see if it has updated or on the SD verification website.
