Overview: If you haven't heard the great news yet, New Mexico has finally moved to an online portal for all your application and renewal needs. You can now apply, renew, request verifications, and access additional copies of your New Mexico license at any moment's notice.
For this renewal, please be aware that New Mexico has incorporated medical license terminology from other fields into the genetic counselor renewal portal. This has caused some confusion regarding how to fill out certain parts of the application. Fortunately, we've already received clarification directly from New Mexico on how to proceed with those confusing portions.

What you'll need:
Completed 40 hours of continuing education
Digital copies of your CEU certificates
Process:
Make sure you are set up for a new account. If you haven't already you can start by clicking on "Self Register" on their portal's homepage.
Sign in to New Mexico portal. Click on "NM Licenses" in the menu bar. There your license number should be listed. Click on the "Renew" to begin.
Note: If your license is not listed, email New Mexico your name, license number, and email associated with your New Mexico account. They will be able to attach your license to your account.
Fill out personal information. This website has a tendency to have the incorrect addresses listed for business and personal. Double (maybe triple check) them.
Now you've reached the confusing portion. Here you will select completion of 40 hours of continuing education (incorrectly listed as CMEs). It gives you three options to select, but you are REQUIRED to complete 40 hours so only having an ABGC certification will not deem you eligible for a renewal. Technically, you should only have two options here to choose from.
Add your CEUs in the box that appeared upon selecting completion of 40 hours of continuing education. Clicking "Add New" will bring a pop-up where you will fill out the details for one of your CEU courses.
(a) For "Credit Type", you'll notice that there are not any options available for genetic counselors. Here you will choose "Specialty Certification" for any CEUs you add.
(b) You'll run into a similar issue with "Course Category". Select "New Mexico Category" for this field.
(c) After you click "Save", another pop-up will appear. Here you will upload a copy of the CEU certificate.
(d) To add more CEUs, click “Add New” again.
When finished, make sure ALL check boxes are marked. If not, your CEU hours will not be counted.
Answer Professional Practice questions.
Upload CEU certificates. Again.🤷♀️
Pay the renewal fee. When you click on "Pay and Submit" another tab will open to complete payment. A receipt will be emailed to you.
An updated license will be mailed to you at the mailing address given in the renewal. It should take 7-10 business days.
Tips and Tricks:
The expiration date will update immediately after submitting the renewal. You can find it under NM Licenses in the dashboard menu.
If you need another copy of the license, you can download it by logging into the New Mexico portal, clicking on "NM licenses" and selecting "Actions". Note, you will need to give the system a few days after a renewal for the changes to be reflected in these downloads.
