As of July 2024, Idaho has officially transferred from paper to online applications with their new portal. We couldn't be happier!
You know what else makes us happy? Idaho allows you to upload the free downloads of your license verifications. So no paying a good chunk of money for that service. Good news for multi-state license holders!
Along with this and no background check requirement, the turnaround time from application submission to issue date is around one week.
Follow along for online application steps, tips and tricks, and everything in between.
Difficulty: ⏳ 1 out of 4 hourglasses. Though the website has some difficulties, the application is relatively short and manageable. Combine that with the lack of additional forms or steps after the application is submitted, this makes the overall process pretty easy.
Price: $200.00 application fee (paid online)

Completing the Online Application Process:
Go to Idaho's website and select "Sign Up" to get started.
Enter your full name and preferred email address (we suggest your personal email) and click "Verify Email".
Do NOT refresh or leave this page. The code is temporary and will expire after a few minutes, so do this quickly. Open another browser to access your email and retrieve the verification code.
Return to the Idaho website and type in the code. Once the code has been verified, finish account set up. You can choose whether or not to set up Two-Step Verification.
After completing set up, log into the portal.
In the dashboard, click on "Apply for a License/Registration/Permit" under Start Here.
You will be taken to a page that lists Basic Registration Information and Fees. Be aware that two additional categories will be added after you complete the first category.
You can either click "Start" or "Next" to begin.
Basic Registration Information: Fill out information about application and personal information
For "License Type", the Genetic Counselor application will be under the "Board of Genetic Counselors".
Tip: When inputing any address, be aware that the "Unit Type" will not allow you to fill it until AFTER you put in the country info.
Application Questionnaire: Answer questions about your legal status, education, and certification.
Required Attachments:
You will upload your ABGC certificate for both "ABGC Exam Proof" & "Proof of ABMG/ABGC Certification".
Skip "ABMG Exam Proof" unless it applies to you.
For "Out of State License Verification", you will have to upload a verification one at a time as well as inputing the issue date for the "Valid From" field. Once you upload one document, another box will appear for an additional verification.
Out of State Licenses: List all of your active and expired licenses by just clicking into the boxes.
Tip #1: You cannot click on "Yes" or "No" until after you start filling out any of the fields.
Tip #2: We usually do not select "Current" because then the expiration date box disappears.
Submit and pay for the application.
Additional Steps:
Request a verification of your ABGC certificate be sent to the board through your ABGC account. Follow along here for step by step instructions.
At last, you are finished!! Happy dance!🕺
After the application is submitted, the turnaround time for the board to issue a license is relatively fast, a week or two. You will receive an email notification when the license has been issued. You can also check the Idaho verification website (click on "Search for Licenses") to see if a license has been issued.
Note, a copy of your license will not be sent to you but will be available for download from your Idaho portal. Just go back to the dashboard page in the Idaho portal and click on “Letters” and then on “License Approved”. The first page should be the notification letter that their license was issued, and the second page is the license itself.
