Most CEU requirements for genetic counselor licenses are pretty straightforward. They say how many CEUs you need at each renewal, and you maintain the proof that you have completed those by your renewal deadline. However, a few states don't follow this simple pattern. Here are the exceptions to the rule to watch out for.
Minnesota
Minnesota requires you complete 2.5 CEUS ( 25 hours) every 2 years, but you have to renew every year. This means you only need to report CEUs with every other renewal. Check out your own CEU deadline by logging in to the state's portal.
Tennessee
Tennessee makes you renew in your birth month every 2 years. However, your 5 CEUs have to be earned during the 2 CALENDAR years prior to your renewal. This means that your CEUs could be due many months before your actual renewal deadline. For example, let's your birthday is in October, so renewal deadline would be October 31st. 2023. You can only count CEUs that occurred in the two previous calendar years, namely from January 1, 2021- December 31, 2022. Anything you take from January 1st- October 31st, 2023 will not count towards your renewal! (They will apply to your future renewal in 2025.) This is a procrastinator's nightmare. Don't leave your CEUs till the last minute for this one.
Washington
Washington makes you renew your license every year on your birthday, but you only have to report your 7.5 CEUs every 3 years. They don't start counting the 3 year cycle until after your first renewal, so you could have nearly 4 years before you have to report your first CEUs! In order to determine when your CEUs are due, look up your license on their verification website.
In the Elsie Tracker, we have taken these exceptions into account. If your renewal date is not the same as your CEU deadline, you will see both dates listed on your dashboard.
When you do renew your license, the next CEU deadline will be calculated for you automatically. Phew!
